- Some stuff I needed to go for a little climb. |

- Goodbye to San Francisco! |

- Hello Amsterdam! |

- Kilimanjaro is just a hop away! |

- Springlands Hotel, the land of small beds for small people. |

- A typical bathroom in a typical hotel. |

- I tried to engineer a bigger bed. |

- The front of Springlands Hotel. |

- Off for a walk down the Springlands road. |

- No, really, we're not in Kansas anymore. |

- I'm hoping this weather will clear before I start climbing! |

- Africa's version of Area 51. |

- I found the house that Jack built. |

- A rice field. Not pictured: the huge guy with the machete
standing about 2 feet away from me. |

- My hike led me to a big tree. |

- Here's the tree. Humorously enough, my first hiking camp
would be called "Big Tree". |

- Black and white monkeys were hiding in them thar' trees. |

- I would have climbed up for a better shot... |

- But the monkeys had mad skillz I did not. |

- So I was forced to just make monkey sounds from the ground
far below. |

- One of the hotel guys showed me how big bugs in Africa are. |

- But enough pedestrian, I had a mission. |

- And that mission started here, in this harmless looking
clearing. |

- We took a trip through the rain forest. That would be a
forest ... where it rains ... constantly. |

- But despite the rain, I could still follow this small trail. |

- Which eventually led to the "Big Tree" (Mti Mkubwa)
camp. |

- This is the "real" big tree. |

- I slept in my tent while my mountain guides slept in that
strange green hut. |

- All too soon, the day passed and it was time to go. |

- Down this very misty, wet rainy trail. |

- Into the land of the lost, where strange moss grows on the
trees. |

- As we ascended, the rainforest yielded to the pine forest. |

- And the clouds started rolling in. |

- Before I knew it, there were clouds everywhere. |

- But we still made it to the Shira 1 camp. |

- All the camps had nice little bathrooms nearby. |

- Here's a shot of the actual mountain across the Shira plateau.
Notice the clouds... duh. |

- Angy desert buzzards were waiting for my eventual demise.
|

- But I flummoxed them by having afternoon tea. |

- And then retired to my palatial tent to look for the mountain. |
